Location

Old High Shield Cottage is situated a few hundred yards south of the B6318 (known locally as the Military Road) and a few miles north of the A69. Local villages and market towns include Bardon Mill 2 miles to the south, Haltwhistle 5 miles to the west and Hexham 13 miles to the south east. The cottage is situated between Carlisle 25 miles to the west and Newcastle 31 miles to the east.

From Old High Shield you can walk north and south along a prehistoric route where depending on the time of year, day and light you might be able to make out Bronze Age hut circles and settlements. This path takes you to Hadrian’s Wall to the north, or Vindolanda and the South Tyne at Bardon Mill to the south.

Getting to Old High Shield is easy by both public and private transport. Regional train and bus services run to the local village of Bardon Mill, from there it is a 45 minute cross-country walk to the cottage. During summer months, the Hadrian's Wall 122AD bus starts from the tourist information centre in Hexham and runs along the Military Road. The bus will stop at Once Brewed Visitors Centre, one mile west of the cottage, or can be stopped on demand when it's safe to do so.
